Plastic pollution is so widespread in the environment that you may be ingesting five grams a week, the equivalent of eating a credit card, a study commissioned by the environmental charity WWF International said on Wednesday. The study by Australia's University of Newcastle said the largest source of plastic ingestion was drinking water, but another major source was shellfish, which tended to be eaten whole so the plastic in their digestive system was consumed too. The amount of plastic pollution varies by location, but nowhere is untouched, said the report, which was based on the conclusions of 52 other studies.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) appears to be the latest target of a credit card breach, according to a report out today from security blogger Brian Krebs. MasterCard has confirmed that it has warned a number of banks about fraudulent charges on cards that have one thing in common: the accounts were all previously used for purchases at the DMV. Travelers who stayed at a Starwood-owned hotel or resort since late last year may want to keep a close eye on their credit card statements. The company, which owns several high-end hotel chains like Westin, Sheraton, W, and St. Regis, announced on Friday that 54 of its locations fell victim to a malware attack against its point of sale system at various points beginning in November 2014. According to the company, the malware collected various bits of credit card information, such as card numbers, security codes, cardholder names, and expiration dates. American Express Co will cut more than 4,000 jobs this year, an executive said, after the credit card company also reported higher quarterly expenses and provisions for bad loans. American Express, which in recent years has been reining in costs to counter sluggish revenue growth, said expenses rose 3.5 percent to $3.60 billion in the fourth quarter, driven mainly by marketing costs and salaries.
